How did Nigeria perform in the 2020 Corruption Perception Index (CPI)

Nigeria ranked 2nd most corrupt country in West Africa…

The 2020 CPI was recently released by Transparency International. The index offers an annual snapshot of the relative degree of perceived corruption by ranking countries and territories from all over the globe. In 2020, Nigeria ranked 149 out of 180 countries with a score of 25/100. In the West African Sub-region, Nigeria ranked 2nd most corrupt country. What do we make of all of this?

On this podcast, we sit down with Samuel Asimi from the Civil Society Centre for Legislative Advocacy (CISLAC) – Transparency International’s chapter in Nigeria. He briefs us on the methodology for gathering the CPI data, some factors that are responsible for the 2020 decline, the implications for the anti-corruption fight in Nigeria, and recommendations to improve Nigeria’s ranking in 2021. We also took lessons from Cape Verde which has consistently topped the table as the least corrupt country in West Africa.
