Ep.21 Building Social Accountability in Rural Communities in Nigeria

Governance in any true democracy should be strongest at the grassroots; this ensures that the people in rural communities who are the most affected by corruption are involved in the governance process.
This week, we sat down with Busayo Morakinyo from Connected Development, a civil society organization in Nigeria who have helped build social accountability in marginalized communities across Africa through their ‘follow the money’ initiative. CODE has sensitized many communities on their rights, duties, and responsibilities as citizens, which has inspired them to demand for accountability from their elected representatives.

Purpose of the job

The is a senior management position linked to specific programme delivery. It will support the Executive Director in providing technical oversight to ensure that programmes are delivered to a high standard. The Programme Director will provide leadership in the design, planning and implementation of programme activities. The Programme Director will also deputise for the Executive Director.

Key functions of the role

The Programme Dierctor will be responsible for the following:

Business Development and Representation

  • Managing external partnerships: The Programme Director will be responsible for assisting the Executive Director in managing key external partnerships for the organisation. This includes managing relationships with donor partners, senior level government officials, and the private sector.
  • Networking & Collaborating– Collaborating and networking with relevant stakeholders within civil society, government, and the private sector – developing relevant partnerships for Step Up Nigeria, representing the Executive Director in meetings etc
  • Business development and Innovation: Identifying funding opportunities and developing proposals to secure funding for Step Up Nigeria’s activities. The Programme Director will lead on quality assurance on all proposals ensuring they are innovative, reflect the values and vision of the organisation, and are put together to an internationally competitive standard. The PD will be expected to develop innovative projects for the organisation and instil a culture of innovation rooted in values of integrity within the team.
  • Meeting Representation– Represent the organisation in all meetings both locally and internationally as requested by the Executive Director

Programme and Grant Management

  • Develop and manage programme budgets.
  • Provide oversight in the management of grants and ensure that programme objectives are met.
  • Technical oversight in the monitoring and evaluation of grant activities
  • Work closely with Programme Associates to ensure effective coordination and management of programme activities.
  • Capture all lessons learnt from programme activities and use it in informing new programme plans

Managing Programme Team:

  • Responsible for managing Programme Associates and Assistants linked to the programmes within the Programme Director’s portfolio.
  • Manage the office- The PD will deputise for the manage the office in the absence of the Executive Director
  • Any other task as assigned by the Executive Director

Key Competencies Required:

  • Strong communication skills- including good writing and presentation skills.
  • A proven track record of leading and nurturing innovative and creative teams.
  • A track record of showing pro-activity and leadership, along with people management skills.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of partners.
  • Ability to deliver at pace and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work and deliver objectives under limited supervision.
  • Good ICT skills including proficiency in word, excel and powerpoint.

Education Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in International Development, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or relevant field. Master’s Degree would be a strong advantage.  
  • Minimum of at least eight years working experience with at least 3 years experience at managerial level in an NGO or similar field.

This post is a full-time position but linked to programme duration.

Ep. 20 How passing the Audit Bill will strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria?

The laws that govern Nigeria’s supreme audit institution were enacted before Nigeria gained her independence in 1960. Seeing as many of those laws cannot solve the problems that the Auditor General’s office faces today, the powers of the Auditor-General must be strengthened to hold Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government accountable for how they spend government funds.
We asked Mr. Segun Elemo, Executive Director of Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI), a Nigerian CSO at the front of the audit bill advocacy, why passing this bill is important and how it will help to fight corruption in Nigeria?

Represent Step Up Nigeria in Lagos and the broader South West Region, building and maintaining key relationships, and driving forward Step Up Nigeria goals and objectives through good programme management, logistics and external engagement.

Key functions of the role

The Programme Associate has the primary responsibility of supporting the Executive Director and the rest of the program team to ensure the successful implementation of projects. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Programme Associate will coordinate and manage key activities as assigned by the Executive Director and support other daily administrative activities by working closely with other Programme Associates.

More specifically, the job will involve the following:

  • Business development: Identifying funding opportunities and developing proposals to secure funding for Step Up Nigeria’s activities.
  • Project Management-lead on managing specific projects as assigned.
  • Technical Support: Providing support in technical areas such as writing reports, conducting surveys, developing questionnaires, developing work plans and strategies for interventions, reviewing questionnaires and generating reports from questionnaires
  • Conducting Research: Conducting simple research on trending anti-corruption areas including media monitoring, conducting research to inform the development of policy briefs, conducting field research which may involve going to deprived communities.
  • Communications: Developing content for website, blog, Facebook and Twitter. Set up and manage the social media accounts, conduct social media advocacy on issues being pursued by the organisation, facilitating meetings and group discussions.
  • Administrative functions: Conduct general administrative functions such as such as setting up meetings, general logistics, organising events and workshops, managing database of relevant contacts for the organisation, keeping administrative records as required.
  • Coordinating book sales and other revenue generating activities with commercial partners- such as handling the logistics of getting books onto e-commerce platforms e.g. Jumia.com and ensuring good customer service.
  • Networking & Collaborating- Collaborating and networking with relevant stakeholders within civil society, government, and the private sector – developing relevant partnerships for Step Up Nigeria, representing the Executive Director in meetings etc
  • Any other task as assigned by the Executive Director

Ep. 19 Young people as drivers of social change

How can we begin to inspire lawful behaviour from young people all over the world? How can we get young people interested in governance and rule of law issues? How can we shift the social drivers of corruption in Nigeria? The UNODC and Step Up Nigeria, through the Education for Justice program(E4J) and Catch them Young initiative (CYI), are educating young people on governance, anti-corruption and rule of law issues. The goal is to groom young people into persons of integrity who will be champions for global development.

On this week’s podcast, we interviewed Marco Teixeira, a senior program coordinator for the UNODC E4J program on the objectives and achievements of the program so far, and goals for the future.
